I'm sorry YNAB, but the default budget categories kinda stink...

What? I'm badmouthing YNAB? The best budgeting or personal finance software out there? That's impossible!

But yes, I am. They can't be perfect all the time. I'm sorry Jesse and the YNAB team... but there is one glaringly HUGE FLAW in the default YNAB budgeting categories.

The default budgeting category groups and categories are the following:

  • Bills
    • Rent/Mortgage
    • Electric
    • Water
    • Internet
    • Cellphone
  • Frequent
    • Groceries
    • Eating Out
    • Transportation
  • Non-Monthly
    • Home Maintenance
    • Auto Maintenance
    • Gifts
  • Goals
    • Vacation
    • Education
    • Home Improvement
  • Quality of Life
    • Hobbies
    • Entertainment
    • Health & Wellness
Do you notice anything that is missing? Something that is GLARINGLY OBVIOUS? Something that should DEFINITELY BE THERE? (especially in a BUDGETING app!)

SAVINGS! That's right! There's NO SAVINGS category group above. No Retirement Savings, No General Investing, no Mortgage Principal Pre-Payment, no College Savings.... COME ONE YNAB!?!? Savings is one of the entire reasons for budgeting!

People in the United States are chronically not saving enough for retirement. Savings, Retirement, Emergency Fund, etc should be DEFAULT categories under a master Savings Category Group to get people thinking about doing it if they aren't already. Now I know people can edit it and add budgeting categories to their heart's content but Retirement Savings and Emergency Fund should be a default option in YNAB. Ok. Rant over. You may now resume your normal activities.

That is bizarre. Some savings can be done automatically, before you ever get your hands on it, like a work sponsored retirement plan (401k, 403b), but most are funded by the I individual (IRA, Brokerage, savings account, 529). I agree it should be part of the budget categories. Maybe they will wise up and add it during a revision. What is your workaround for this?

My job doesn't have a 401k so I do it all after I get the paycheck.

Currently "automatically" put 15% gross of each weekly paycheck into a 15% holding category in YNAB which I then funnel into:
  • Wife's IRA category
  • My IRA category
  • General after tax investing category
My wife should be signing up for her new job's 403b soon.
